Central nod for RGGVY scheme covering five southern districts
Wednesday, 19 October 2011 15:28The Central government has cleared the second stage of the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) covering the five southern districts of Kerala at an estimated outlay of Rs.89 crore. Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed told the Assembly in response to a call attention motion from E. Chandrasekharan (CPI) on 19-10-2011 that the clearance was given following the discussions that he and the Chief Minister had with the Energy Minister in New Delhi recently. He, however, conceded that implementation of the first stage of the scheme in the State, covering the seven northern districts, left a lot to be desired.
The State government, he said, had no control over implementation of the scheme which was being overseen by the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC). Work under the scheme had been given to different companies which were yet to begin work in some districts. Although the scheme was launched in 2005, it had been put on stream only in 2010. Over the last one year, there was no noticeable progress in the implementation of the scheme on account of delay in procurement of material and various other factors, he added.
Mr. Mohammed said he had convened a meeting of all concerned last month to review to the situation and would hold another meeting very soon to speed up work on the scheme.
