KSEB to seek ISO 9001 certification for three hydel power stations

iso9001As part of the efforts to ensure more transparency and operational efficiency in hydel power houses, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is planning to obtain ISO 9001 certification for three major hydel power stations in the state.

Announcing this in the assembly, power minister Aryadan Mohammed said those power stations were the ones established at Moolamattom, Moozhiyar and lower Periyar. A national level consultancy would be set up to undertake the task of completing the formalities for obtaining the certificate. The board would soon float a tender for the selection of the consultancy, the minister said.

According to Aryadan, the ISO 9001 certification would help the board step up security arrangements at major power stations and would also help to enhance the productivity and establish better co-ordination among the board staff.

While expressing hope that KSEB would soon be able to roll back the half-an-hour cyclic power cuts in a few days, the minister said the consumer base of the board had increased almost double in the last decade. However, the staff strength and other facilities of the board had not increased proportionately, he added.

The electricity board has engaged Kerala Productivity Council for conducting a study on the basic steps to be taken by the board for obtaining the ISO certificate. The tender for identifying a national consultancy for turning the hydel stations into ISO 9001 standard would be floated as per the recommendations of the productivity council.
