KSEB and NTPC signs MOU for 200MW wind energy
Tuesday, 19 July 2011 09:53
NTPC Ltd. is venturing outside its known territory of operation - generation of thermal energy - by exploring wind energy possibilities. Union Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal stated this at Thiruvananthapuram on 18-07-2011 at a function to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the NTPC and the Kerala government for setting up wind wheels at potential locations in the State to generate an estimated 200 MW.
"This has not been NTPC's territory, but now it is focussing on wind energy too all over the country," Mr. Venugopal said.
He said the NTPC could commission the proposed wind power units within one year of the State government handing over the land required at places such as Ramakkalmedu and Udumbanchola in Idukki district and Kanjikode and Attappady in Palakkad district, identified as ideal locations.
Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed said the land required for the wind power unit at Ramakkalmedu could be handed over to the NTPC immediately. The State government would also have the land for the units at the other three places acquired expeditiously.
He said the Kerala State Electricity Board had identified locations with a total potential to generate 650 MW in various parts of the State. He urged the NTPC to make a comprehensive study of wind energy possibilities in the State. Inderjit Kapoor, Director (Commercial), NTPC, and S. Subbaiah, Power Secretary, State government, signed the MoU on behalf of the respective parties.
