Fire at Moolamattom power house
Tuesday, 21 June 2011 09:33Two engineers at the Moolamattom underground power house of 780MW Idukki hydro power station sustained major burns, following fire in the control panel of generator No-5 on 20-06-2011 evening.The injured,Assistant Engineer Merin Isaac and sub Engineer K S Prahba, were rushed to a nearby hospital and later taken to Medical Trust Hospital, Kochi. The government has assured quality medical assistance to the injured.
The control panel of generator 5 caught fire at around 5.45 pm. The 780-MW power house has six generators of 130MW each which only three were in operation when the accident took place. All generators were immediately shut down and the employees were evacuated from the power station.
Power Minister Sri. Aryadan Mohammed said the accident would not lead to any power crisis and detailed enquiry will conducted about the incident. KSEB chairman Sri. V P Joy told that the situation was under control and power generation could be resumed within a few hours.
Board member (generation) Smt. Annamma John and Chief engineers, Sri. Baburaj and Sri. Mohammed Rawther led the crisis management.
Update : Assistant Engineer Smt. Merin Issac and Sub-engineer Sri. Prabha K.S, who were injured in the June 20 blast at the Moolamattam power house succumbed to injuries on 25-06-2011 and 29-06-2011 respectively.
